The Japanese economy expanded at an annual rate of 1.7 percent in January-March, buoyed by improved private consumption and exports, after shrinking by the same margin in the previous quarter, government data showed Wednesday.

The growth in real GDP is also believed to have been pushed up by leap-year effect. "Our view that the economy is basically on a moderate recovery path has not changed."
