Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz has expressed a negative view toward the Japanese government’s scheduled raising of the consumption tax rate from 8 percent to 10 percent in April next year.

He made the remark during a meeting analyzing global economic trends, organized by the Japanese government on Wednesday in Tokyo.

During this meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office, Stiglitz said the consumption tax hike will not boost demand and now is not a time to raise the rate. "A consumption tax increase now is going in the wrong direction," he said. (Reference: Japan News)
