The International Monetary Fund said Tuesday Japan is forecast to incur an economic contraction of 0.1 percent in 2017. It is mainly due to an expected negative impact of the planned consumption tax increase from 8 percent to 10 percent in April that year.

The projection is likely to prompt calls for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to postpone the planned tax increase and expand fiscal spending to spur growth.

In its latest World Economic Outlook report, the IMF also downgraded its growth forecast for the Japanese economy in 2016 to 0.5 percent from 1.0 percent. (Reference: The Japan News by The Yomiuri Shimbun)
