Japan’s economy contracted for the second consecutive quarter in July- September.

Japan’s seasonally adjusted gross domestic product fell 0.2 percent from the previous quarter in real terms, shrinking at an annualized rate of 0.8 percent, the Cabinet Office said in a preliminary report.

"If the impact of inventory adjustments is excluded, Japan achieved positive growth,” Economic and Fiscal Policy Minister Akira Amari said at a press conference. ”The fundamentals of the economy are not bad."

"The Japanese economy came to a standstill, rather than entering a recession." said Koya Miyamae, senior economist at SMBC Nikko Securities Inc.

In nominal terms, GDP in July-September grew 0.01 percent from the previous quarter, for an annualized increase of 0.1 percent.(Reference: Japan News-Yomiuri Shimbun)

日本経済は、７−９月期に２四半期連続で減退した。日本の季節調整済みの国内総生産は、実質で前期比０．２％減少し年率で０．８％減少したと、内閣府が基調報告で述べた。

「もし、在庫調整の影響を除くと、ゼロ成長であった」と、甘利明経済財政担当相は、記者会見で述べた。「経済の基礎条件は、悪くはない」とも述べた。

「日本経済は景気後退に入ったというより、静止状態に到達した」と、宮前幸谷SMBC日興証券シニアエコノミストは述べた。
